Sustainable mobility plan for ISO 14001
The Sustainable Mobility Plan is a key tool within an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, as it allows for the identification, control and reduction of environmental impacts associated with employee commutes, vehicle fleets and business travel. Mobility generates CO₂ emissions, energy consumption and other impacts that ISO 14001 requires to be managed systematically.
The implementation of a mobility plan helps to meet the main requirements of ISO 14001, providing real actions, measurable objectives and clear evidence in audits. It also reinforces the organisation’s continuous improvement and environmental planning.
- Identification and assessment of environmental aspects, especially indirect emissions (scope 3), fuel consumption and pollution associated with travel.
- Definition of environmental objectives and targets, such as reducing emissions, promoting sustainable transport or optimising the fleet.
- Operational control, establishing internal mobility standards, criteria for business travel and efficient use of vehicles.
- Monitoring and environmental indicators, enabling the measurement of results, analysis of deviations and demonstration of continuous improvement.
- Legal and reputational compliance, aligning with climate policies, regulatory requirements and stakeholder expectations.
Which companies must submit a Sustainable Mobility Plan?
With the entry into force of the new Sustainable Mobility Law, the number of companies required to develop and submit a Sustainable Mobility Plan for Work has increased. The main change is the reduction in the threshold number of employees, making it mandatory for companies with 200 or more employees, and in some cases with 100 or more employees per shift.
Companies where the Sustainable Mobility Plan is mandatory
The companies concerned have a maximum period of 24 months from the entry into force of the law to implement their sustainable mobility plan for the workplace.
- Urban or peri-urban workplaces with 200 or more employees in total.
- Workplaces with more than 100 employees per shift, regardless of the total number of staff.
- Companies with several workplaces, where the obligation is assessed per workplace and not globally.
- Public administrations and dependent bodies with more than 200 employees.
Companies where the Mobility Plan is recommended
- Companies with fewer than 200 employees, on a voluntary but strategic basis.
- Companies with their own fleets or intensive logistics, regardless of size.
- Organisations with ESG, CSR or ISO certifications, where the plan reinforces environmental and reputational compliance.
