EcoVadis Gold Medal: What is it and how can you obtain it?

What is the EcoVadis Gold Medal and how is it achieved?

The EcoVadis Gold Medal is an award given to companies with the highest scores in its sustainability assessment system. It means that an organisation is among the top 5% globally.

The EcoVadis platform analyses performance in four key areas:

  1. Environment. We would like to highlight that Ecovadis certification scores ISO 14001 or EMAS environmental management certification, ISO 50001 energy efficiency certification and having a GHG report, in accordance with the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064.
  2. Labour practices and human rights. Having ISO 45001 certification and work-life balance practices such as an equality plan or a sustainable mobility plan is valued.
  3. Business ethics, in accordance with the code of conduct implemented and corporate compliance requirements.
  4. Sustainable purchasing, for example by prioritising purchases with eco-labels, environmental product declarations or proximity.

The assessment is based on policies, actions and demonstrable results. To achieve the Gold Medal, a company must obtain an Ecovadis score of over 70/100.

How to obtain an EcoVadis Platinum Medal?

An “EcoVadis medal” is an international recognition that distinguishes a company’s achievements in sustainability among thousands of organisations evaluated in the “EcoVadis” database. The “EcoVadis Platinum medal” is the highest level and is reserved only for the top 1% of companies evaluated worldwide. It confirms that your organisation belongs to the top 1% of global leaders in corporate sustainability.

EcoVadis emphasises that continuous improvement is key to maintaining and strengthening sustainability results. Implementing effective strategies, avoiding common mistakes and encouraging sustainable innovation enables companies to retain their place among the best.

When you achieve EcoVadis certification, your company must meet the following criteria to obtain this recognition:

  1. Complete the EcoVadis assessment: respond comprehensively to the questionnaire and provide documentation on the four key topics: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.
  2. Achieve an overall score in the 99th percentile: be in the top 1% of all companies with an EcoVadis assessment worldwide.
  3. Meet the minimum score in each pillar: achieve at least 30 points in each of the four sustainability topics.
  4. Exceed additional eligibility criteria: have no critical alerts in EcoVadis 360° Surveillance related to corruption, human rights violations, serious environmental impacts, among others.
  5. Note that certain industries (such as tobacco, arms or coal mining) are not eligible for EcoVadis medals.

You do not obtain EcoVadis certification. EcoVadis is a globally recognised assessment platform and one of the world’s most comprehensive sustainability rating tools that evaluates companies, but it is not a certification programme.

EcoVadis provides sustainability ratings and scorecards to companies, but does not issue formal certification.

Obtaining this medal demonstrates a real commitment to sustainability. In addition:

  • It improves the company’s reputation by guaranteeing Ecovadis (an independent organisation) compliance with regulatory, sustainability and social responsibility requirements.
  • It increases sales by facilitating access to national and international customers who demand ESG criteria.
  • It enables continuous improvement in sustainability and social responsibility. It allows opportunities for improvement to be identified through the Ecovadis audit report.
  1. Register on the EcoVadis website (www.ecovadis.com).
Create your company profile, providing details of your business activity, contact information, etc. You will receive login credentials to access the platform and a questionnaire tailored to the size, industry, and location of your company.
  2. Start an assessment using the Ecovadis questionnaire. The questionnaire covers four topics: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, Sustainable Procurement.
  3. Gather supporting documentation as evidence. Supporting documentation includes items such as policies, reports, and data reports on performance and progress.
  4. Expert analysis by EcoVadis. Once submitted, an EcoVadis analyst will evaluate your responses and documentation and cross-reference external sources.
This analysis process usually takes 6 to 8 weeks (sometimes 8 to 12 weeks).
  5. Receive your EcoVadis scorecard and rating. You will receive your overall numerical score (0-100) as well as scores for each topic. The scorecard highlights strengths, areas for improvement, and suggested corrective actions.
  6. Depending on your score, you may be awarded an EcoVadis medal. Only the top 35% of companies can receive a medal such as Platinum (top 1%), Gold (top 5%), Silver (top 15%) or Bronze (top 35%).
